Dated evidence and the current-custody check
The Sheriff describes a completed replacement facility and says the previous temporary-structure facility closed in 2019.[16] A later July 7, 2026 BSCC letter documents an unannounced June 29–30, 2026 inspection, including review of grievance packets dated October 2025–May 2026.[15] That is dated inspection evidence, not a live custody check or a published notary-admission rule. Confirm the signer’s current location and the proposed visit directly; do not infer a reopening date or present closure from the older facility’s history.
Musick is not Irvine city holding
James A. Musick Facility is operated by the Orange County Sheriff. The state inventory separately lists an Irvine municipal temporary-holding facility.1 Both are associated with Irvine, but they are not the same place.
If the person was recently arrested by Irvine Police, the arresting agency is the right first call, followed by the OC Sheriff locator, before assuming a transfer to Musick. Temporary holding can change within hours.117 Our city jail and transfer guide explains how that check works.
How we handle a Musick request
- Find the signer. The OC Sheriff Inmate Information System is inside the Sheriff's Public Services Portal and requires an account or sign-in.7 A search result is a starting point, not a promise the person will still be there tomorrow.
- Confirm the facility process. We ask whether Musick is currently receiving the visit type needed for a notarial act, the appointment channel, visitor credentials, arrival location, security restrictions, and whether the document can be carried in. We do not infer notary access from construction completion, an "open" state-list entry, or attorney-visit rules.
- Prepare the complete document. Confirm the required notarial act and recipient instructions. An acknowledgment may concern an already-signed document; a jurat requires signing in the notary’s presence and an oath or affirmation.[19]
- Resolve ID and witnesses. What identification the signer can access, and whether any required witness will be admitted.
- Plan the return. How the signed document leaves the facility, confirmed before we promise a handoff, shipping, or filing.
What we can and cannot promise
We can review what is known about the facility, explain exactly what has to be confirmed, and quote availability once the visit looks workable. We can perform an eligible California notarial act if the signer, identification, document, and facility conditions allow it.
We cannot promise that a signer is at Musick, that Musick is accepting a particular visit category, that a particular identification item will be accepted, or that a deadline will be met. We would rather tell you that up front than send someone on a wasted drive.

Is James A. Musick Facility open and housing people now?
The August 4, 2026 state list includes Musick, and a July 7 BSCC letter documents a June 29–30 inspection and review of records.[1][15] Those dated sources do not confirm a particular person’s present location or notary availability. Check custody and the proposed visit directly. The Sheriff’s reference to a 2019 closure concerns the previous temporary-structure facility, not proof that the replacement is currently closed.[16]
Can a notary use a professional or attorney visit at Musick?
We ask the facility what category applies to a notary signing and use only that. A notary visit is not an attorney visit, and we do not present it as one.
What if the person is still with Irvine Police?
That is a different facility and process. Use the city jail and transfer guide and confirm whether the person has moved to county custody before planning a Musick visit.
Can you bring a form for the signer?
The document should come from a lawyer, agency, transaction party, or other proper source and be final before the visit. We handle the notarization itself.
How much does a Musick visit cost?
